What is B Corp and B Lab?

In today’s world, consumers are more aware of the social and environmental impact of the companies they support. That’s why businesses are stepping up and taking action to create a better future for all of us. One way they’re doing this is by becoming a Certified B Corporation®.

So, what is a B Corp™ and who’s behind it? Well, it’s a community of businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability. B Lab, a non-profit organisation, started the movement back in 2006 with a mission to redefine business success. Their goal was to create a world where companies prioritise both profit and purpose.

To become a Certified B Corp, a company must score at least 80 out of 200 on the B Impact Assessment, which looks at a company’s practices in areas such as governance, workers, community, environment, and customers. The assessment includes over 200 questions about a company’s practices, like whether they use renewable energy, have a diverse workforce, and practise supply chain transparency. But it’s not just a one-time thing. Certified companies must recertify every three years and show that they’re always working to improve their social and environmental impact. They also sign a legal agreement that holds them accountable for considering the impact of their decisions on all stakeholders, from workers to the environment.

B Corps don’t just care about profit. They’re all about making a positive impact in the world. The community shares knowledge, resources, and best practices to make things better for everyone. And it’s not just for small businesses. There are over 4,000 B Corps in 77 countries across 153 industries, including big names like Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, and The Body Shop.

A B Corp certification is a powerful way for companies to show their commitment to social and environmental responsibility. By meeting rigorous standards and signing a legal agreement, B Corps are held accountable for their impact on all stakeholders. The movement is growing as more companies recognise the importance of balancing purpose and profit. As consumers, we can support this movement by choosing to do business with Certified B Corporations®. Let’s make a better world, one company at a time!
